Public Printer

Printer of documents for a government. This was a Legislative appointment, and as politics became more competitive, this office followed suit. Most Public Printers also published newspapers, and with increasing frequency, those elected were of the same political persuasion as the current setting Legislature. In some states which had a large foreign speaking population, with their own language newspapers, several Public Printers were elected, one in English and another for whatever other language was largely spoken.
