As early as the first Federal elections in 1788, there were candidates, who while alligned with one party or another, was supported in the press by both parties in a particular election.


Council

Council: Upper house of the state legislature in Delaware prior to the Constitution of 1792. In New Jersey, prior to 1844, this was called the Legislative Council, the same name as used by the ruling body of the various territories before becoming states. Please also see State Senate.
