[8]"Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Mr. Randolph's district to the editors of the Spirit of 76. 'Yesterday the election for a member of Congress to represent this district, was held for Buckingham. Every engine which human ingenuity and valice could devise was set on fast by the active opponents of Mr. Randolph. Printed handbills were sent from Richmond to the enemies of Mr. R. containing the grossest slanders against him; which yesterday made their first appearance. Notwithstanding these libels, Mr. R. will be elected with an overwhelming majority (to use a favorite expression of ministerialists). The vote of yesterday was for ~ Randolph, 198, for Eppes 199; giving Mr. Eppes seven votes more than Mr. Baker got (Mr. Baker opposed Mr. Randolph at the last election).
