[4]"PORTLAND ELECTION. The election of representative in this town took place on Wednesday last. Two tickets were regularly nominated, one by a federal caucus, consisting of six federalist in favor of separation, one by a caucus of the friends of separation, without distinction of party consisting of three republicans and three federalist. The three federalist on the union ticket were likewise on the federal ticket. The whole number of ballots was 520 - necessary to a choice 261. .... The three republicans were elected by a plurality of about 120 over the opposing candidates. There was a third ticket consisting of the three federal candidates who were not on the union ticket with three others. This may be considered as the ticket opposed to separation. The highest candidate on this had 38 votes." The Eastern Argus (Portland, ME). May 18, 1819.
