Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]Because no candidate received a majority of votes from the electoral college, the presidential election of 1824 was thrown into the House of Representatives. Here, in accordance with the Twelfth Amendment, the president was to be chosen from among the top three candidates in the electoral vote; in this case, these candidates were John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and William H. Crawford. William Clay, the fourth candidate and Speaker of the House, gave his support to John Quincy Adams, swinging the House's election in Adams's favor. Adams then appointed Clay Secretary of State, leading many to accuse the pair of entering into a "corrupt bargain" by which Clay supported Adams for the presidency in return for Clay's own appointment as Secretary of State. No official investigation followed this accusation, so it can be neither definitively confirmed nor denied.
