Notes:
[1]The vote approving the new State Constitution passed, which resulted in some major changes to the political process. Elections were moved from April to November, the two tiered system of voting was abolished, as was the Council of Appointments. State Senate Districts were changed and various county officials were now chosen by popular votes.
[2]It appears that most of the newspapers giving the State Wide Returns by counties were reprinting the results as published in the Albany Daily Advertiser (Albany, NY), and perhaps another Albany newspaper, probably The Albany Gazette (Albany, NY), a few say they were quoting their returns from an Albany letter, dated February 14th. Most of these returns were those being received by the Secretary of State's Office and filed there until Officially counted by Canvass Board, which comprised the Secretary of State, Surveyor General, Attorney General, Comptroller and Treasure. The heading on the results from the New York Statesman, which is quoting the Albany Daily Advertiser (Albany, NY), does suggest that the returns listed, although from the Secretary Of State's Office, were not yet final, as they state the following: 'The official canvass, we understand, is to be made today.' Unfortunately there were some issues with the votes filed in the Secretary of State's Office, which the newspapers printed and the eventual votes reported in the Official Canvass. Even more unfortunate is that in some counties, both sets of returns got injected into the final vote. This may help explain why in some cases the town totals reported in The Albany Argus (Albany, NY) do not match the County votes listed in the State Wide Recapitulation, which were both given in the same issue. Some of the differences are explained in The Albany Argus (Albany, NY) under the "Towns Rejected" section of the Official Canvass. Others errors hopefully are just type setting mistakes.
