[7]There were numerous tickets in the Essex District. In addition to a regular Federalist ticket, there was a Union list, suggested by the Republican newspaper the Essex Register of April 1st. This was composed of two members from the Federalist ticket, plus three Republicans. The Union ticket was not supported by one of the two Republican newspapers in the district, the Essex Patriot March 25th, which announced a separate Republican list composed of candidates who ran in the 1819 election.
