[2]Jonathan Trumbull, Governor of Connecticut died on August 7, 1809. Even though there was a Lieutenant Governor who could assume official duties, when the new Legislature convened in October, and after some discussion about the legality of doing so, they decided to elect a new Governor. John Treadwell, the sitting Lieutenant Governor, was elected.
[3]The American Mercury (Hartford, CT) was the only newspaper to report the Council vote. All other newspapers listed the Council vote as unanimous for John Treadwell.
