"The Election of last Monday resulted as follows: . . . It is necessary to observe that this result is far from exhibiting the relative strength of parties in this county. The nomination of Messrs. Page, Smith, and Milton was made but a few days previous to the election, and was done to unite the few federal votes which were expected to be given, rather than from the prospect of success. We venture the assertion, that not half the federalist in the county were apprized that a poll would be opened for the gentleman mentioned, and consequently did not attend the polls." Alexandria Gazette, Commercial and Political (Alexandria, VA). April 15, 1813.
The Virginia Argus (Richmond, VA) and the National Advocate (New York, NY) list John Smith with 347 votes.
