[5]"At a meeting of the Democratic Association and other Democratic Republicans of the county of Gloucester, held at Woodbury Sept. 16, 1805, convened in order to complete the unfinished business of the late meeting, held for the nomination of Candidates to represent the county in the ensuing Legislature. It appearing to this meeting that previous to the nomination a resolution had been adopted that the meeting would support such candidates as should be fairly nominated by said meeting. It likewise appearing to the meeting, that previous to, and at said meeting, there had been undue influence, deception, falsehood and bribery made use of to procure the nomination of Joseph Cooper, by Benjamin B. Cooper, and others. The meeting conceive it a duty due to themselves and fellow-citizens, to shew their abhorrence to all such base conduct. Resolve, That they reject the nomination of the said Joseph Cooper, and agree to support Samuel C. Champion in his place. The meeting being officially informed that Richard Risley, Esq. has declined, and the townships of Egg-harbour, Weymouth, and Galloway, had nominated Reuben Clark, in his stead." The True American (Trenton, NJ). September 23, 1805.
[6]"The Republican Candidates for Council and Assembly have been elected in the counties of Essex, Morris, Sussex, Hunterdon, Monmouth, Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland. The Federal tickets have succeeded in Bergen, Somerset, Middlesex, Burlington, and probably Cape-May. The strength of parties in the Legislature of this state this year is therefore Republicans to Federalists--tho' not so good as we expected, not so bad as it might have been." The True American (Trenton, NJ). October 21, 1805.
[7]Samuel C. Champion received 6 votes as Samuel Champion.
[8]Samuel C. Champion received 5 votes as Samuel Champion.
