[4]"Legislature of New Jersey. House of Assembly Tuesday, October 23, 1798 ... A letter from Jonathan Forman, returned as a Representative from Monmouth, by which he declined accepting his seat, was read, and his resignation accepted of. Considerable conversation ensued on a question, Whether Mr. Gordon's election (the next highest candidate) was valid ? which was determined in the negative. Agreeably to a motion of Mr. Condict, the Speaker issued his warrant, directing a new election to be held, to fill that vacancy." The Centinel of Freedom (Newark, NJ). October 30, 1798.
