[25]"The whole number of ballots cast was 4334; of which 2168 was necessary to constitute a choice." Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA). May 14, 1823.
[26]"It will be seen by the above list, that all the names borne on the Federal Ticket are elected, excepting Mr. Winchester, and Samuel L. Knapp, Esq. Mr. W. publicly declined being a candidate on the morning of the election and in some of the Wards Mr. Cobb was placed on the federal ticket in his room, and is elected. Mr. Knapp fell a few votes short of a choice, and there is one vacancy to be filled." Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA). May 14, 1823.
[27]First Twenty Four elected, One Vacancy.
[28]The Repertory (Boston, MA), Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA) and Boston Commercial Gazette (Boston, MA) all list Samuel Cobb with 2263 votes, but the Ward totals add up to 2292.
[29]The Palladium May 13, 1823 and the Independent Chronicle and Boston Patriot published a breakdown by Ward. There were several differences in their reports. The Palladium lists Nathaniel P. Russell with 196 votes in Ward One and 177 votes in Ward Eight and a Total of 2072. The Palladium lists Samuel Cobb with a total of 2242, which appears to be a printing error. The Palladium lists Gerry Fairbanks with a total of 2040, which appears to be a printing error.
