[2]This was the fifth of five ballots taken among the Select and Common Council members to elect a mayor for the city of Philadelphia. No candidate received the required majority of votes until the fifth ballot.
[3]"Joseph Watson of the Select Council, and Alexander Adams of the Common Council, were then deputed to inform Mr. Barker of his election; who, having returned, reported, that Mr. Barker, sensible of the honour done him by the Select and Common Councils, accepted of the Office conferred upon him; whereupon, Mr. Barker was introduced into the Chamber, and qualified by the Recorder, in the presence of the joing meeting."
