[6]"Extract of a letter to the Editor: 'The election in Jefferson county has terminated in favor of federalism, by a majority of only 14 votes, or thereabouts, on the assembly ticket. Last year their majority was 145 -- so that the republicans have good cause for congratulation. One fact, disgraceful to our antagonists, ought not to be forgotten: in their zeal to carry the election, our gaol doors were thrown open and criminals taken to the poll; at least, this was the case in the instance of John Baxter, lately indicted at New-York for high treason and committed to this gaol to await his trial. Mr. Baxter, not being an inhabitant of this town, was taken to Brownville, where it was presumed he might once more offer aid and comfort to his friends.' " The Albany Argus (Albany, NY).
