[6]"The election then proceeded with spirit, and a considerable time before the poll was closed, the Selectmen (whether they can be justified by propriety or precedent, we will not say) counted the votes and found a Republican majority, we presume, of legal votes. This direful news operated like electricity on the Federal Leaders, who immediately dispersed in every direction; horses were mounted; every wharf and workshop was ransacked; age and residence was disregarded; new inhabitants and boys were urged to the meeting; chaises were put in requisition for the infirm; and our would be Nabobs condescended to take arm in arm those, who at other times they would scarcely speak to; and by such means, they obtained a majority!! This we believe would not have been the case, if the poll had been kept open ten minutes longer, as a considerable number of Republicans were on the way, who did not arrive in season. When the votes were declared, the excessive joy manifested by the Feds at their safety, in huzzaing and clapping could only be equaled by that of a criminal on receiving a short reprieve!"
