Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]On the second Monday in December next the citizens of (this) the South-Eastern district are called upon to give their suffrages to some suitable person to represent them in the ninth Congress of the United States. JAMES ELLIOT, Esq. is the candidate held up in the Vermont Journal,--MARK RICHARDS, Esq. is held up in the Political Observatory (Walpole, NH).--Should the Federalists at this trial vote for Mr. Elliot, his reelection is certain--otherwise doubtful." Windsor Federal Gazette (Windsor, VT). November 27, 1804.
[3]"In the S.E. district Mark Richards, esq. was the Republican candidate, and we learn that the federalist generally, with a portion of the republicans, voted for hon. Mr. Elliot, the present member." Political Observatory (Walpole, NH). December 15, 1804.
[4]"From the S.E. district, we have ...never entertained a scruple that Mr. Elliot would carry his re-election, provided the federalist should universally vote for him, which appears to have been the case. For we were aware that the majority of republicans in that district was not large, and that several through want of information, would certainly vote for Mr. Elliot - it is to be hoped, that such will pause and ask themselves, what it means, that they should be found voting with the whole body of federalist! - or has the dispute, which has distracted our country for eight years past, been about nothing? Thus it is, that an honest republican people are exposed to be divided and conquered; while federalist are ever united, and tho' a minority, are enabled to carry their point. A little more of the wisdom of the 'serpent' mingled with the harmlessness of the 'dove,' would do the republicans no hurt, and their liberties would be safer." Political Observatory (Walpole, NH). December, 22, 1804.
[5]"Federal papers are so elated with the prospects of Mr. Elliot's re-election, that they carry the matter beyond all bounds." Political Observatory (Walpole, NH). January 5, 1805.
[6]"To show how the democratic editors treat every one who is not perfectly subservient to their party views, we select the following from the National Aegis 'Mr. Elliot is re-elected member of congress for the South Eastern district of Vermont. He was the only Federal Candidate; and of course received the undivided support of that party, who knew that he was "indeed and in truth" devoted to them. His hypocritical profession of Republican principles probably obtained him some Republican suffrages. By these means, he has obtained another opportunity to display his real character, in the Legislature of the nation.'" The Post-Boy, and Vermont and New-Hampshire Federal Courier (Windsor, VT). January 22, 1805.
