[1]The separation of Maine from Massachusetts was a prominent issue in 1816 and generated a great amount of newspaper articles and commentary. There were two elections in Maine on this question, the first on May 20, 1816 which failed and a second held September 2, 1816, which after some controversy was also declared to have been unsuccessful.

Yesterday the joint committee on the subject, reported to the Senate, that they found the number of votes in Maine for a separation was 10,584 - the number against it 6,491 - and the whole number of qualified voters in the towns which furnish the returns 37,938."
