[2]"On Tuesday last, the Senate of this commonwealth made a quorum and proceeded to the choice of a speaker when Mr. Ludwell Lee the former Speaker and Mr. Archibald Stewart of Augusta were nominated ~ On examing the ballots, they were found to stand as follow: For Mr. Stewart 9, Mr. Lee 5, Majority 4. As in the case of the House of Delegates, the republican candidate, the friend of freedom was elected." The Examiner (Richmond, VA). December 6, 1799.
