[1]Elected.
[2]Lewis Williams is re-elected by a majority of 3744 over Gen. Montford Stokes.
[3]"We are authorized by Gen. Montford Stokes as well as another citizen of Wilkesboro, N.C. to state that he was not a candidate for Congress at the last election." Richmond Enquirer (Richmond, VA). September 23, 1823.
[4]"The Editor of the Richmond Enquirer (Richmond, VA) labors either under most egregious misinformation, or an inexcusable obliquity of mind, - otherwise he would not have said, without note or comment, in publishing the result of the congressional election in the Wilkes district, that Lewis Williams was elected by a majority of 3744 votes OVER Gen. Stokes, - thus leaving the world to suppose this the true measure of the popularity of the two gentlemen in that district. Gen. Stokes was NOT a candidate; and the people of the district knew it very well. It is true, in Surry county, the place of Mr. Williams' residence and nativity, General Stokes received 127 votes; but it is equally true that perhaps, not one of those who voted for him believed him a candidate." Washington Republican (Washington, DC). September 25, 1823.
