Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]"From Surry County, To the Editor "It is with real pleasure I state to you that our friend James Johnson of the Isle of Wight gained at the Sussex congressional election the other day a majority of 183 and on Monday last in the Isle of Wight, Johnson gained a majority of 253. -- Southampton will give Johnson a handsome vote, though he will lose a large majority -- but here Johnson, will come ahead; we shall here give to Johnson a majority of from fifty to one hundred -- thus you see in this district, Federalism is down; and the palliators of British aggression will be no more -- and this persecuted district will rise once more clear of Edwin Gray. I hope that his leader Randolph will be left to condole with him in retirement."" The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 23, 1813.
[3]"Extract of a letter from Surry County, dated 20th April 1813. "I take a few moments merely to congratulate you on the result of the Southampton election, just made known to me. -- The vote stands thus: Gray 324 -- Johnson 137 -- which has completely decided the contest."" The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 23, 1813.
[4]"To the Editor -- dated Southampton, April 20. "I have great pleasure in announcing to you, that the issue of the election for congress in this county on Monday, leaves no doubt of the exclusion of Mr. Gray. Southampton has always been his strong-hold and he has uniformly gone from it with an overwhelming majority. The case now is happily reversed -- he goes to Surry 249 votes behind. I subjoin a statement of the polls in the three counties."" The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 23, 1813.
[5]"To the Editor -- dated Surry County, 28th April 1813. "Having no doubt but you will be gratified to learn the result of our election, which took place yesterday, and is the last county in the district, I take great pleasure in communicating a state of the poll which closed about sun set -- neither Mr. Johnson nor Gray were present. The votes for Congress stand thus: Johnson 239, Gray 37 -- Mr. Johnson's majority in the whole District about 451."" The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 9, 1813.
[6]The Star (Raleigh, NC) lists James Johnson as the War candidate and Edwin Gray as the Peace candidate.
[7]Alexandria Gazette, Commercial and Political (Alexandria, VA) lists 578 votes for James Johnson. This is probably a misprint.
