[3]"From Winchester, April 5. Yesterday the Election..., commenced at the courthouse in this town ~ the state of the poll, at sundown, was as follows:~ ...For Delegates: Maj. Hugh Holmes 686, John Milton 332, James Chipley 329, Samuel Kercheval 148. Mr. Kercheval declined in the afternoon. The poll will commence this morning at ten o'clock." The Virginia Argus (Richmond, VA), April 13, 1803; and, Petersburg Intelligence, April 15, 1803.
[4]"Winchester, April 11. At the final close of the poll, for a representative to Congress, and a Senator and two Delegates to the Legislature of this Commonwealth, on Wednesday evening last, at the Court House in this town, the numbers appeared as follows...Both the candidates for Congress are Democratic Republicans. The counties of Frederick and Shenandoah compose this district. Three of the candidates for a seat in the House of Assembly are Democratic Republicans. John Milton, Esq. an independent honest farmer, was the only Federal Republican that offered. Lewis Wolfe, Esq..., is also a Federal Republican."
