[4]"Nevertheless, the Federalists had an irreducible majority of some thirty votes, which they used like a bludgeon to impose their will upon the state. John Langdon's term in the Senate was soon to expire, and his implacable foes no longer harbored any sentimental admiration for his revolutionary services. Brushing aside Republican efforts to postpone the election or to distribute the Federalist vote among several favorite sons, the bloc of eighty-seven in the house nominated James Sheafe, a Portsmouth merchant and ex-Tory, to replace John Langdon, the Portsmouth merchant and ex-federalist. Langdon received only twelve votes. The senate concurred in Sheafe's election by ten votes to two, and on March 4, 1801, he took the Senate seat that Langdon had occupied for twelve years."
