[3]"On Monday, the first day of the election, the poll was a tie between Mr. Sheffey and Mr. Patterson. The high sheriff preferred, if no objection was made, that the poll should be continued for two other days; Mr. Patterson the only candidate present, consented. On Tuesday evening at sun set after having taken nearly a hundred votes, the poll was again a tie between the same two gentlemen; and yesterday evening, being the third day, the result was as above stated. There was great exertion made by the friends of Mr. Sheffey and Mr. Patterson. The election was honorably conducted and peaceably closed." Winchester Gazette (Winchester, VA). May 4, 1822.
