[4]Elected.
[5]"No. Voters, 4139. Make a choice, 2070." Governor's Council Records.
[6]Massachusetts law required a majority to elect. Enoch Titcomb would subsequently be elected by the Massachusetts General Court
[7]Samuel Phillips vacated his seat when he became Lieutenant Governor. On June 2, 1801, there was a legislative election to replace him. Thomas Kitteridge was elected, but declined to serve. On June 5, in another legislative vote, Jacob Crowninshield was elected.
[8]"SENATORS. The federal list for Essex has a great majority of votes. The numbers for Messrs. Crowninshield, etc. in most instances sink far below those for the Antifederal Candidate for Governor. Should Mr. Phillips be Lt. Governor it is probable both Mr. March and Mr. Titcomb will come into the Senate." Salem Gazette (Salem, MA). April 9, 1801.
[9]"SENATORIAL CANDIDATES. There are eleven vacancies in the returns of Senators for this Commonwealth... One in Essex, where 2070 votes were necessary to a choice;--the candidates are, ENOCH TITCOMB, Esq. who had 1680, and Capt. JACOB CROWNINSHIELD, who had 1624 votes." Columbian Centinel. Massachusetts Federalist (Boston, MA). May 16, 1801.
[10]The Salem Gazette (Salem, MA) lists 35 votes for Ebenezer March.
[11]"SENATORS. ESSEX. Haverill, for the old list about 150, for the new about 99 ... There is no doubt that the federal list of Senators will prevail in Essex." New-England Palladium (Boston, MA). April 10, 1801.
[12]The Columbian Centinel. Massachusetts Federalist (Boston, MA) reports 310 votes for "March" in Newburyport. This figure is correct for Nathaniel Marsh, not Ebenezer March. There is no figure given for "Marsh."
