[7]Samuel Phillips vacated his seat when he became Lieutenant Governor. On June 2, 1801, there was a legislative election to replace him. Thomas Kitteridge was elected, but declined to serve. On June 5, in another legislative vote, Jacob Crowninshield was elected.
[8]"SENATORS. The federal list for Essex has a great majority of votes. The numbers for Messrs. Crowninshield, etc. in most instances sink far below those for the Antifederal Candidate for Governor. Should Mr. Phillips be Lt. Governor it is probable both Mr. March and Mr. Titcomb will come into the Senate." Salem Gazette (Salem, MA). April 9, 1801.
