Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]A substantial number of votes in Greene County were mistakenly recorded as having been cast for Erastus Rott rather than Erastus Root. This split in the votes resulted in a majority for John Adams, who was declared the winner. Erastus Root successfully contested the election, and John Adams was made to vacate the seat.
[3]The Columbian (New York, NY), June 10, and The Columbian. (For the Country) (New York, NY), June 11, report Erastus Root as receiving 375 votes and Erastus Rott as receiving in 576 votes in Greene County.
[4]"Erastus Root successfully contested the election of John Adams to the Fourteenth Congress and served from December 26, 1815-March 3, 1817." Dubin, Michael J. United States Congressional Elections, 1788-1997: The Official Results of the Elections of the 1st through 105th Congresses. Jefferson, NC: McFarland and Company, 1998. 57.
[5]"It appears that an error was committed in the office of the said James Bill [Clerk of Greene County], by his deputy clerk in making transcripts of the returns from the towns of Catskill, New Baltimore, Coxsackie, Durham and Greenville in the county of Greene, for the office of the Secretary of State by writing the name Rott instead of Root, when in truth and fact in the original returns on file in the office of the said clerk the said name was written Root. ... These votes added to the poll of Erastus Root give him a majority of 246 votes over John Adams. The committee therefore respectfully submit the following resolutions: Resolved that John Adams is not entitled to a seat in this House. Resolved that Erastus Root is entitled to a seat in this house." Report of the Committee of Elections on the Memorial of Erastus Root contesting the election of John Adams. National Archives.
