Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]"In 1823, as a young Virginia state senator, Edmund Ruffin had refused to support Calhoun for the presidency, as Calhoun was too much the nationalist. Only in succeeding years did the South Carolinian, in Ruffin's eyes, see the light and emerge as a great spokesman for southern rights and slavery. At Calhoun's death in 1850, Ruffin joined with younger pro-slavery extremists who picked up the torch, and he emerged as one of the elder statesmen of the secessionist movement. In 1861, the glorious moment came round at last - Ruffin enlisted, at age sixty-seven, as a private in a Charleston militia company, the Palmetto Guards. At 4:30 in the morning of April 12, he stood at the east mortar battery of Fort Johnson, unmistakable with his long white mane, his homespun suit with a fresh insignia, and his hat with a rebel blue cockade. General Beauregard had selected the Palmettos to fire the first shot at Sumter, and the company in turn handed the honors over to Ruffin, who was "highly gratified by the compliment, and delighted to perform the service - which I did." Ruffin's shell exploded on Sumter's parapet; nearby Confederate batteries let loose their fire; and the War of Rebellion had begun." The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln. 788. The quote by Edmund Ruffin is cited from The Diary of Edmund Ruffin. William Kauffman Scarborough ed. 1972-89. Vol. 2. 588.
