[5]"Mr. Van Ness lost 17 votes by the omission of the W in his name; and 12 by the votes having been put, by mistake, into the Senatorial ballot box. As he falls but 27 short of the lowest on the democratic ticket, it is evident that he lost his election by these mistakes." The Balance, and Columbian Repository (Hudson, NY). May 3, 1803.
[6]"The truth happens to be that Mr. Van Ness lost but TEN votes by the omission of the W in his name, THREE by being put in the senate box, and TWO by all other mistakes, making FIFTEEN only in the whole county, instead of 29. Mr. Miller, the lowest republican candidate, lost 3 votes by mistake: he had 1764 good, in all 1767; Mr. Van Ness, had 1738 good, in all 1753, ELEVEN short of Mr. Miller's good votes and 14 short of the whole. Our statement, as usual, will probably be disputed; but we have it from the clerk's office." The Bee (Hudson, NY). May 10, 1803.
