[4]Alexander MacRae made an announcement dated September 22, 1798 that he would be a candidate "to supply the vacancy which will be created by Mr. Gile's resignation" Dixon's Observatory (Richmond, VA). September 24, 1798. This was also printed in the September 27, 1798 and October 1, 1798 issues of Dixon's Observatory (Richmond, VA).
[5]In November 1798 Mr. MacRae issued a second announcement clarifying his candidacy: "We are authorised to say, that the Hon. Alexander McRae will only be a candidate at the General Election, which will happen on the third Monday in March next, to represent the district for which William B. Giles, Esq. has heretofore been elected." The Examiner (Richmond, VA). November 5, 1798.
