Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]Joseph Hiester was supported by the Federalists as well as the Old School Republicans.
[3]The official results of the election were as follows: 67905 votes for Joseph Hiester, 66300 votes for William Findlay, and 21 scattering votes. However, these totals do not include the votes cast in the several townships with late returns, nor the scattering votes often not listed in the official returns.
[4]"By the correction of a mistake in the return from Warren County, Joseph Hiester's majority is reduced to 1389." The American Republican (Downingtown, PA). November 14, 1820.
[5]The Lancaster Journal (Lancaster, PA), December 8, reports on a petition to contest the election of Joseph Hiester: "Whether it will be presented or not, is somewhat doubtful. The most respectable and influential of the Findlay party, we are induced to believe, are decidedly opposed to it. The meetings in this county have, we are informed, very wisely resolved to do nothing. !! ...We shall begin to doubt whether our government be republican or not, if the majority are not allowed to govern. For the idea of there being more illegal votes given for General Hiester than for Mr. Findaly, is too ridiculous to be entertianed for a moment by any sensible, disinterested and unprejudiced man."
[6]The October 16th edition of The Democratic Press (Philadelphia, PA) and the October 20th edition of The Susquehanna Democrat (Wilkes-Barre, PA) both report 1941 votes for Joseph Hiester.

[11]"The non-attendance of the returning judge of Mifflin township on Friday last, the day appointed by law for making out the general return of the county, prevented the votes of that township from being brought into the return. Mr. Findlay's majority there, we understand, was low." The Mercury (Pittsburgh, PA). October 18, 1820.
[12]"We have the pleasure of stating to you the result of our county election. The Corruptionists have succeeded by a majority of 87 votes...We should have had a majority, had it not been for the young rascal who has had the charge of the Post Office here, the intimate friend of Richard Bache, of trout-fishing memory. This scoundrel suppressed every communication and pamphlet in his power in favour of General Hiester: he is now in gaol, and will probably be sentenced to the Penitentiary for robbing the mail." The Democratic Press (Philadelphia, PA). October 18, 1820.

In Montgomery, Hiester had 63; notwithstanding many negroes against him. These townships compose the district in which William Findlay was born; it is the neighborhood of his uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and their negroes; notwithstanding this, Heister had a majority of 36." The Democratic Press (Philadelphia, PA). October 16, 1820.
