[12]"Yesterday the election of Representatives was made in this town. Despondency from the result of the votes in the April election, kept back many Federalists and the Democratic Ticket was consequently carried by an uncommonly large majority." Salem Gazette (Salem, MA). May 16, 1809.
[13]"On Monday last this town chose eleven Republicans to represent it in the General Court. The federalists deserve the credit of using their utmost exertions; but it is to them a mortifying fact, that the Republicans have the greatest numbers, and are fast increasing. The federalists had but nine candidates - for what reason we know not." The Essex Register (Salem, MA). May 17, 1809.
