Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]"John Roane is elected to Congress by a large majority for the district formerly represented by Mr. Garnalt." Washington Intelligencer (Washington, DC). May 3, 1809.
[3]"In Caroline County, Mr. Woodford had a large majority - From King and Queen we have not heard particulary, but understand that Mr. John Roane more than made it uIt is said, he went to Essex, with a majority of 130. There is no doubt of Mr. R's election. He is firmly democratic." The Enquirer (Richmond, VA). April 18, 1809.
[4]"The following is from the Winchester Gazette (Winchester, VA) of the 20th ult. 'Glorious News...This is indeed Glorious News, and if it is true, of which we have no reason to doubt, it is an event upon which we most heartily congratulate our friends...our surprize is therefore equal to our joy. The result of the Virginia election is this: Mr. Lewis, Major Stephenson, General Breckinridge, Mr. Swoope and Mr. Sheffey, (five federalists) are elected. In a few days we hope to announce the election of Mr. Eyre. Mr. Randolph and Mr. Gray, who voted with the federalists on all questions which concerned our foreign relations, are also elected -- the former by a majority of nearly 300. To balance all this, Mr. Garnett, a friend of Mr. Randoph, declined a re-election, and Mr. Roane, a Jeffersonian, is elected in his place. But gratifying as this statement is to our feelings, it is not the correct criterion by which the present state of the publick sentiment and the progress of correct principles in Virginia should be estimated. The democratick legislature of Virginia has so proportioned the congressional districts, as to give to democracy all possible force and as far as could be to deprive the federal portion of the community of its due weight in the national councils. A striking instance of this is seen in the district for which Mr. Eyre is a candidate...'" Federal Republican and Commercial Gazette (Baltimore, MD). May 3, 1809.
