Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]The Official Results, without the rejected towns, were 12,216 for John T. Gilman, 12,039 for John Langdon and 27 scattering votes.
[3]The Official Results only list the state totals and the totals for the three rejected towns. The county totals come from town totals as listed in newspapers. These totals add up to 12,306 votes for John T. Gilman.
[4]The votes from Piermont, Stratford and Society Land were rejected.
[5]The rejection of the votes caused controversy among the newspapers. The Political Observatory lists John T. Gilman with only 12,216 votes (without the rejected votes), tallies all the votes, including the rejected votes for a statewide total of 24,452, of which 12,227 would be a majority. However, in including the rejected votes for the statewide total, the Observatory did not include the rejected votes for Gilman (this error would be reprinted by The New Hampshire Gazette (Portsmouth, NH) and National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser (Washington, DC)). This error, deliberate or not, was pointed out by many other newspapers, including the Dartmouth Gazette (Hanover, NH), New Hampshire Sentinel (Keen) and Farmer's Museum, or Lay Preacher's Gazette (Walpole, NH). The Official Returns, without the rejected towns, leave Gilman with a majority of 150 votes. Inclusion of the rejected towns leaves Gilman with a majority of 75 votes.
