[2]"In the district of Loudoun and Fauquier, Leven Powell, Esq. had a majority of 287 votes." The Columbian Mirror and Alexandria Gazette (Alexandria, VA). November 12, 1796.
[3]"At the late election of a President and Vice President, a gentleman of the name of Leven Powell, had wisdom and firmness enough to vote for George Washington and John Adams." Gazette of the United States, and Philadelphia Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA), December 20, 1796; Kline's Carlisle Weekly Gazette (Carlisle, PA), December 28, 1796; and, Southern Centinel, and Gazette of the State (Augusta, GA), January 26, 1797.
[4]"For the CITY GAZETTE. A correspondent, who is well acquainted with the ancient dominion, think if that great man, Mr. Jefferson, was less well qualified to discharge the duties of President of the United States, he would be more popular than he is in some parts of his own state. He thinks if he was a frequenter of county-court meetings, horse-races and cock-fights -- a lover or cards, dice and morning slings -- he would not have been so grossly and violently attacked, as he has been, by Citizens Simms, Powell, Mayo and others who are begging and coazing their countrymen to elect them electors of the President and Vice President. It is very much to the honor of the citizens of America, that the vile English practice of soliciting votes has not obtained any where but in Virginia; and it is somewhat curious it should be peculiar to a state, the people of which are always bouncing in favor of their republicanism and republican virtures. In this country, the candidates for public favor endeavor to deserve it, but those who are suspected of soliciting it, are hooted at; and any man who would have the effrontery to publish himself as a candidate for any appointment would be overwhelmed with the ridicule and abhorrence of every class of his countrymen." City Gazette and Daily Advertiser (Charleston, SC). November 7, 1796.
