[2]The Republican nomination of William C. Jarvis for Congress incurred some opposition within the party and the following article was sent to the Pittsfield Sun and published in their October 31st issue. "Mr. Allen - I do not like those new fashioned republicans, manufactured out of flaming federalist, who turned ( if the have turned again ) only to get an office. I like old friends best, and I take the liberty of offering to the Electors of Berkshire District, the Hon. Caleb Hyde of Lenox, as a more suitable person to be supported for a Representative in Congress, then either of the federal candidates put in nomination. He is well known to the people, and has repeatedly served them in responsible stations, and always with fidelity. Try him again, An Old Republican, No Quid."
