Notes:
[1]"[In the Senate], there being no choice [made], a resolution was moved for the appointment of John C. Spencer, which was negatived, 17 to 10. A resolution for the appointment of Samuel Young was also negatived, 14 to 13--as was also a resolution in favor of Rufus King, 2 to 5. And the senate adjourned without coming to a choice. . . . [In the Assembly], there being no choice [made], Mr. Bacon moved a resolution for the appointment of John C. Spencer, which was negatived 72 to 54; Gen. Root then moved a resolution for the appointment of Col. Young, which was also negatived, 82 to 44; as was a resolution moved by Mr. Oakley in favor of Mr. King, 90 to 25....Gen. Root then offered a resolution for the appointment of Philetus Swift. Mr. Oakley moved to amend the resolution by striking out the name of Mr. Swift, which was carried in the affirmative. He then proposed to fill the blank with the name of John Wells, of the city of New York; which was negatived 96 to 29. And the house adjourned." Long-Island Star (Brooklyn, NY). February 10, 1819.
