[2]Because Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr received the same number of votes in the electoral college, the presidential election of 1800 was thrown into the House of Representatives. Though Jefferson and Burr were Republican running mates for president and vice president, respectively, some Federalists in the House of Representatives felt that Burr's election as president would be less damaging than Jefferson's. Since separate elections did not take place for each office, some Federalists cast their votes for Burr, giving him six votes and Jefferson eight, leaving Jefferson one vote short of the nine required to achieve a majority and win the election. Finally, on the thirty-sixth ballot, Federalists in Delaware, Maryland, and Vermont cast blank ballots, giving Jefferson both Maryland and Vermont. Thus, Jefferson garnered ten votes and Burr four, while two states, Delaware and South Carolina cast blank ballots.
