Notes:
[1]Massachusetts law required a majority to elect for the U.S. House of Representatives. The original election was held on November 4, 1816 with a 2nd Trial on January 27, 1817, a 3rd Trial on May 1, 1817 and a 4th Trial on July 21, 1817. A 6th Trial would be held on December 1, 1817.
[2]There were addition mistakes in the Official Returns, which listed 618 votes Joshua Cushman and 529 votes for Thomas Rice, but doing the addition, with the town figures as shown on the Original Returns, Joshua Cushman received 678 votes and Thomas Rice received 569 votes.
[3]If the votes not reported in the Original Returns, which were taken from newspapers, had been counted, Joshua Cushman would have been elected.
[4]The votes from Dearborn were not included in the Original Election Returns.
[5]There were no votes recorded in Fairfax.
