[16]This election is the only time Pennsylvania chose its electors by legislative vote.
[17]The Federalist candidates were nominated by the State Senate and the Republicans by the State House of Representatives. "The members of the two Houses met in convention, and by a joint vote, restricted by a previous Nomination, proceeded to choose the following persons Electors." Kline's Carlisle Weekly Gazette (Carlisle, PA). December 10, 1800.
[18]"The following Senators, knowingly, wittingly, and willingly, not having the fear of their Constituents before their eyes; but instigated by that arch fiend Alexander Hamilton, and his legion of British Adherents; have endeavored, all that in them lies, to devote the freemen of Pennsylvania to a political Death; for which they are now put upon their trial by their Country. Who among us can say, God send us a good deliverance; unless, in the words of the President Adams, they show, by their repentance, that they deserve that mercy of their injured Countrymen?" The newspaper goes on to list several State Senators from Republican districts who apparently voted with the Federalists. The Intelligencer, and Weekly Advertiser (Lancaster, PA). December 3, 1800.
