Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]"Whole number of votes 4963. Make a choice 2482." Boston Weekly Messenger (Boston, MA). May 16, 1816.
[3]Massachusetts law required a majority to elect. John Whiting would subsequently be elected by the Massachusetts General Court.
[4]"We have a letter from a Gentleman in Stockbridge, which mentions that the democratic votes for Senator, in one of the towns in Berkshire were lost, being given for the wrong person, the candidate having been changed after the first nomination. This fact will render it still more probable that there will be at least one vacancy in this county." Boston Daily Advertiser (Boston, MA). April 11, 1816. This most certainly pertains to Capt. Jonathan Allen, one of the original Republican candidates, who, however, declined before the election and was replaced by Nathan Willis. It appears that some voters were not aware of this and therefore voted for Jonathan Allen, resulting in only Caleb Hyde being elected with required majority of votes.
