[9]Extract of a letter, dated "Lancaster, Oct. 15, 1813. 'It is now nearly 7 o'clock and we have just closed our election returns. The federalists have gained the election but they have little to boast of, I add a list of the votes. James Humes, esq. came within 39 votes of Robert Maxwell, the lowest federal candidate for Assembly. The election has been small throughout the county but the democrats have gained several hundred votes since last year. Several persons said in my hearing, "we voted the federal ticket last year because they told us if we did so we would have Peace immediately. We find we were deceived and the only way of getting Peace is to let Perry and Harrison at them, support the administration in a just and righteous war, elect members in favor of the war, and we will soon have peace--therefore we will vote the democratic Ticket." Mr. Crouch will undoubtedly be elected to Congress; Lebanon and Dauphin will give successive democratic majorities.'" The Democratic Press (Philadelphia, PA). October 19, 1813.
