[1]The History of Allegheny County uses the spelling Postlethwaite for Joseph R. Postlethwait.
[2]The Pittsburgh Gazette (Pittsburgh, PA) and Porcupine's Gazette report 917 votes for Ephraim Jones.
[3]"The returns of the number of votes from some of the election districts were made in figures, contrary to the form prescribed by law for regulating the annual general election; this makes an alteration in the Sheriff, by giving Mr. Postlethwait a majority. The judges of the election have noticed this error in the returns made out for the Governor; it therefore rests with him to determine whether the votes returned in figures are admissible or not." Porcupine's Gazette (Philadelphia, PA). October 26, 1798.
[4]"Ephraim Jones having six hundred and eighty four votes returned to us in writing and two hundred and thirty three in figures only, and the said Joseph R. Postlethwaite having eight hundred and eight votes returned to us in writing and sixty four in figures only." History of Allegheny County, Part I, 225.
