[2]"The members having assembled at the State-House, to the number of 124, which being more than a majority, and being duly qualified, Mr. Gibson moved that Mr. William Gaston be appointed Speaker. Mr. J.H. Bryan moved that General Thomas Davis be appointed to that office. A ballot being called for, the Clerks proceeded to take it; when it appeared on counting out the votes, they were as follow: Thomas Davis - 95; William Gaston - 29. Republican majority - 66."
