[2]"By the above returns it will be seen that the whole number of votes polled on Tuesday at the election of Mayor, was 2650, of which the Hon. John Phillips had 2499, there having been no other candidate put in nomination." American Statesman and Evening Advertiser (Boston, MA). April 18, 1822.
[3]The Boston Commercial Gazette (Boston, MA) and Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA) list John Phillips with 2500 votes and 150 scattering votes.
[4]"The Federalist efforts were to no avail, however, for Quincy out polled Otis by 1,736 to 1,384 in the final count. Narrowly denied an outright victory by a few hundred votes cast for other candidates in traditionally Republican wards, the front runner disappointed his followed by deciding he would rather withdraw than go in by a small majority on the second ballot, leaving the way open for a compromise candidate, John Phillips, a notional Federalist who commanded the respect of all parties. Nonetheless, the scale of Otis's defeat could not be disguised; in the wake of their upset in the senatorial elections, the Federalist share of the vote had slipped still further, to less than 40 percent." Era of Experimentation. Daniel Peart. p 33.
[5]The Boston Commercial Gazette (Boston, MA) and Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA) list John Phillips with 231 votes and 15 scattering votes.
