[8]"There being no federal opposition, the republicans gave in but few votes in this part of the State. In Essex only 897 were received - and less than 100 in the township of Newark." The Centinel of Freedom (Newark, NJ). November 12, 1816.
[9]"The ELECTION for Members of Congress and Electors of President and Vice President took place through out this state on Tuesday and Wednesday the 5th and 6th ins. There being no opposition, the republican ticket agreed upon at Trenton, has of course succeeded. The number of vote taken in this county (Middlesex) is 438." The Fredonian (New Brunswick, NJ). November 14, 1816.
[10]Rufus King was the Federalist Party candidate for President. As the New Jersey Federalist felt the election a hopeless cause, they did not run a Presidential Slate of Electors.
[11]Though Aaron Vansyckle would be elected, he would not cast a vote in the Electoral College. Robert MacNeely would be the final elector for New Jersey in the Electoral College.
[12]The Original Election Returns list 263 votes for Aaron Kitchell but the township totals add up to 254 votes.
[13]William Rossell received 47 votes as William Russell.
[14]William Rossell received 26 votes as William Russell.
[15]William Rossell received 34 votes as William Russell.
[16]William Rossell received 4 votes as William Russell.
