[4]"In the above whole number return from the town of Troy are not included; and the Committee report, that among the returns from the District of Bristol there are two papers purporting to be returns from that town, one of which is subscribed by Benjamin Durfee, Robert Miller, Aaron Davis Jr, George Borden Jr, Selectmen, Attest Isaac Winslow Town Clerk in which they certify, that for Senators and Counsellors Samuel Fales has fifty seven votes, Seth Spooner fifty seven votes - And the other of said - And the other of said returns is subscribed by Jonathan Brownell, Abraham Bowen, Elijah Blossom Jun, Selectmen of Troy - Attest Benjamin Brighthman Town Clerk; and wherein they certify, that for Senators and Counsellors, Josiah Dean Esq had 68 votes, Nathaniel Morton Jun esq 68 votes. And your Committe further report, that if the first described certificate was made and returned by the proper certifying Officers then the whole number of voters would be 2951 and that 1476 votes would then be necessary to make a choice; but if the second described certificate was made and returned by the proper certifying Officers, then the whole number of voters would be 2962 and 1482 votes would be necessary to make a choice, and the hon. Josiah Dean would then have 1536. And the Committee further report, that in the return from the town of New Bedford, in the District of Bristol, which is included in the above whole number of votes first stated after the list of Senators voted for, are the word and figure scattering 6."
