[13]"The election returns in this paper, are from The Albany Gazette (Albany, NY), which is a federal party paper. The Assembly of the state is however undoubtedly federal. The majority will be from twelve to sixteen, putting out of the question any disputation about the election in any ward in this city. Those who grumble at this result are referred to three things as the cause; the partial and ruinous course of the late administration; the Robespierrian proceedings in this city; the want of firmness in those who should always be as firm as they affect to be enlightened and patriotic. The truth is that there is amongst us too much of selfishness and too little of a disinterested and magnanimous public spirit.--Men of expedients are willing to do any thing, no matter how atrocious or base; no matter whom it wounds or whom it kills, to save themselves. Personal and temporary interests are consulted instead of permanent national good. We are more apt, as party-men, (and party is every thing) to look to our offices than to our country. ."
