[5]Most candidates to the Continental Congress that met under the Articles of Confederation from 1781 to 1788 were elected by the State Legislatures. This is a rare popular election for Congressional Delegates.
[6]In The United States Chronicle: Political, Commercial, and Historical (Providence, RI), the candidates were listed in four groups of two as if they were running against each other in statewide races, with a vote differential listed for each pair. The pairs were Peleg Arnold and James M. Varnum, Jonathan J. Hazard and Nathan Miller, Daniel Manton and George Champlin and Sylvester Garaner and Christopher Lippitt.
