Notes:

[1]Elected.
[2]Thomas MacKean was also supported by the Federalists.
[3]"Extract of another letter from Lancaster, dated Jan. 27. 'The resolution for impeaching the governor has this moment been negatived, 44 to 41. The house of representatives, you know, consists of 86 members, so that this question had been decided by a majority of the whole house -- One member (Mr. McKinney of Northumberland) was absent, but his presence would have made no difference in the result, and indeed, it is generally supposed that he did not wish or intend to vote on the question.'" The True American and Commercial Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA). January 30, 1808.
[4]"The first real breach came on the occasion of the celebration of the Louisiana Purchase on May 12, 1804. In the dinners which followed the procession and oration, the toasts of the Tammany Society and the Republican Greens were remarkable for their failure to include the Governor. Since Duance and Leib dominated the Tammany Society and the former captained the Republican Greens, it was obvious that a direct provocation was intended. The Philadelphia Evening Post announced that the Governor's friends would remember this slur, and the Aurora replied with a diatribe against courtiers and special friends of the executive. It added that it was quite willing to be included among the enemies of the Governor if he was capable of aligning himself with such men. From this beginning developed one of the most slanderous and malignant campaigns Philadelphia had ever known. The original differences over the Governor soon dropped out of sight, and the whole matter became a fight to out Leib and Duan efrom their control of the Republican Party in the city and the county." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 68-69.
[5]"The legislative session of 1804-05 set the stage for the succeeding gubernatorial campaign. The chief events were the failure of the attempt to impeach the Supreme Court judges, the fight over the revision of the Constitution, and the final break between the Governor and the majority of the Republicans in the legislature. These developments resulted in the Republican caucus nomination of Snyder for Governor and in the renomination of McKean by a number of Federalist and Republican members." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 77.
[6]"Snyder's nomination seems to have resulted principally from his German descent and from the elimination of Hiester and Muhlenberg as prospective candidates. Furthermore, as Speaker of the House and a principal in the clodpole affair, he served as a symbol of legislative prerogatives against a domineering executive. However, his nomination meant even more than this. It marked the passing of the Republican political hegemony from the city to the county." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 77.
[7]"In almost every county of the State there were bitter struggles as the Republicans split and began to align themselves for and against McKean. Leading Republicans in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties quickly broke away from their old comrades and allied with the Federalists to advance the re-election of the Governor. Joseph Hiester led the Constitutionalists in Berks County and was opposed by his cousin, State Senator Gabriel Hiester, who sought to win the voters for Snyder. In western Pennsylvania, William Findley, longtime Republican leader and Congressman of Westmoreland County, threw his very considerable influence behind McKean and wrote numerous articles on his behalf. In the perenially Democratic stronghold of Washington County, McKean's friends were accused of making an open and vicious use of the patronage to buy off the Governor's opponents." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 99.
[8]"With few exceptions, the most important being Westmoreland, Berks, and Northampton counties, McKean was victorious in the same counties which had returned Federalist majorities for Ross in 1799. From the areas favorable to Ross the Governor had received 13,492 votes, or 36.2 per cent of his total vote in 1799; but in 1805 he received from them 24,294 votes, or 55.6 per cent of his total vote. In the German counties of Northampton and Berks McKean polled 6,772 votes to Snyder's 3,216. Had these figures been reversed, as they might easily have been but for the efforts of Hiester and Muhlenberg, Snyder would have been elected. McKean's success was unquestionably due to Federalist and German votes." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 100.
[9]"The most impressive fact about the election results is how poorly McKean did with the many advantages he possessed. Snyder, his opponent, was virtually unknown outside the legislature and his home county; and many Republicans were at best only lukewarm in his support. On the other hand, McKean had been a prominent and distinguished person in national and State affairs for a generation. He had the active aid of the bench and the bar and of a large body of officeholders whom he had appointed. The attack on the Constitution had brought many moderate Republicans and the majority of Federalists to his assistance. The most influential German leaders had done their utmost to give him the votes of their people. The Society of Constitutional Republicans had flooded the State with circulars and pamphlets; and 30 of the State's 40 newspapers had been devoted to his cause. Yet he had won by only 5,000 votes out of more than 82,000 cast. In Gallatin's opinion, the election had been a victory for the Duane group since they had carried at least two-thirds and probably three-quarters of the Republican vote." Higginbotham, Sanford W. The Keystone in the Democratic Arch: Pennsylvania Politics, 1800-1816. Philadelphia: Pennyslvania Historical and Museum Commission, 1952. 100.
[10]The Original Returns did not break the votes for Adams County down by district. The Centinel (Gettysburg, PA), which did break down, listed all of the votes aside from those for Thomas MacKean and Simon Snyder as "scattering."

[21]Clearfield county was erected on March 26, 1804. From 1804 until 1811 Clearfield county voted with Centre county by an act of the legislature stating: "That the county of Clearfield shall be an election district, and the electors thereof shall hold their general elections at the house of Benjamin Jordan, in the said district, and shall be entitled to vote for members of the Federal and State Legislatures, sheriffs, commissioners, and other county officers for Centre County." History of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, p.66

[23]The Intelligencer, and Weekly Advertiser (Lancaster, PA) lists Leitner's as Lightner's.
[24]The Intelligencer, and Weekly Advertiser (Lancaster, PA) lists the votes from the township of Mount Joy under Mayer's District.
[25]Rindaw township was also known as Rush township.
[26]The Freeman's Journal, and Philadelphia Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA) from October 29 and the United States Gazette from October 30, 1805 list Simon Snyder with 501 votes.
[27]Votes from Tioga County were included with votes from Lycoming County.
[28]These votes were either rejected or not returned in time and were not included in official vote totals.
[29]Original Returns list Thomas MacKean with 2361 votes. The True American and Commercial Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA) from October 12 lists MacKean with 2360 votes, and the Der Readinger Adler (Reading, PA) from October 22 and the Norristown Herald and Weekly Advertiser (Norristown, PA) from October 11 list MacKean with 2362 total votes. Individual township totals listed here are from the Norristown Herald and Weekly Advertiser (Norristown, PA), and therefore show MacKean to have one more vote than he should.
[30]"The majority in favour of Mr. Snyder in the county in which he is an inhabitant is 1953." Kline's Carlisle Weekly Gazette (Carlisle, PA). October 18, 1805.
[31]Bustleton, as the True American, October 10, 1805 refers to this populated place, is an alternate designation for a district composed, according to Original Election Returns and the Aurora. General Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA) in 1804, of Byberry, Lower Dublin, Moreland, and Oxford townships in Philadelphia County in 1804.
[32]The Commonwealth (Pittsburgh, PA), October 16, 1805 lists Thomas MacKean's total for Washington county as 1088 votes, however, the individual township totals they list for him add up to 1144 votes. The Commonwealth (Pittsburgh, PA) is the only source which lists individual township totals for this county. Other sources, The True American and Commercial Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA)from October 24, 1805, Kline's Carlisle Weekly Gazette (Carlisle, PA) from January 6, 1806, The Freeman's Journal, and Philadelphia Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA) from October 19, 1805, and Aurora. General Advertiser (Philadelphia, PA) from October 23 and October 28, 1805, all list 1088 as the total number of votes for Thomas MacKean in Washington County.
[33]Die Harrisburger Morgenrothe (Harrisburg, PA), January 4, 1806, lists the vote counts in Westmoreland County as Thomas MacKean with 2364 and Simon Snyder with 392 total votes. These vote totals include the votes from Armstrong County, which were reported together with the votes from Westmoreland County in the Official Returns.
[34]Votes from Indiana County are reported together with votes from Westmoreland County.
[35]York County has nine election districts. Only four are reported individually, but the county total reflects the total vote of all nine districts.
