Notes:
[1]Elected.
[2]"The return of the votes from Westfield township not being forwarded to the County Clerk until some time after three o'clock (the hour appointed by law for them to be returned) and not until after the votes from the other townships had been added up, he was of opinion that he could not admit the return of the votes for Council, Members of the Assembly, Sheriff, and Coroners. The votes for Members of Congress he received, as they were returnable any time in the course of the day. Admitting, however, the votes from Westfield to be lost, the successful candidates have a sufficient majority to secure their election without them. It is hoped this will be a caution in future." The Centinel of Freedom (Newark, NJ). October 16, 1798.
[3]"The requisite certificate from the town of Westfield, not being delivered to the Clerk of the County by 3 o'clock on Saturday, as directed by law, the votes of that township, relating to the candidates for Council, Assembly, Sheriff, and Coroners, we are informed, were refused. We have, however, to shew how they stood, inserted them agreeably to the return." Newark Gazette and New-Jersey Advertiser (Newark, NJ). October 16, 1798.
[4]"The returns from the township of Westfield for the state legislature were not received in time." New-Jersey Journal (Elizabethtown, NJ). October 16, 1798.
